PRESS RELEASE: Dayton Northwest Weed and Seed Demolition Program to Provide Training, Eliminate Nuisance Structures
Contact: Bill Nelson, Director of Building Services, 333-3871
A special program authorized today by the Dayton City Commission will provide on the job training for up to 10 Dayton residents and demolish approximately 100 nuisance garages.
The Department of Building Services will contract with Spirit of Peace Community Development Corporation to complete demolition of dilapidated garages and sheds in neighborhoods throughout the city. The Dayton-based non-profit agency will hire five to 10 residents in need of skill development to complete the work called for by the $94,000 contract, which covers demolition, debris removal and incidental work.
“The purpose of this program is two-fold—to demolish neighborhood eyesores caused by nuisance garages and to put some local people to work,” said Bill Nelson, Director of Dayton’s Department of Building Services. “Spirit of Peace Community Development has experience working with hard-to-employ individuals.”
Mayor Rhine McLin said the program serves important public needs.
“Workforce development is essential for our community’s future,” said Mayor McLin. “This program provides basic skills to people in need and supports the City of Dayton’s goal of improving quality of life in our neighborhoods.”
